Our Family Digital Constitution
Adopted May 16, 2026
Our Family's Values Online
We treat people online the way we want to be treated. Our family values — kindness, honesty, and looking out for each other — come with us into every chat, comment, and post.
Devices & Screen Time
Phones and tablets go away during meals and after [agreed time] each evening. Devices charge in a shared family space at night, not in bedrooms.
Privacy & Personal Information
We don't share our full name, home address, school, or live location with people we haven't met in person. Profiles stay private unless we have decided together to make them public.
Strangers, Friends, and Online Relationships
We don't add or follow people we don't already know in real life without talking about it together first. If a stranger reaches out, we tell each other.
Photos, Videos, and Our Image
We ask before posting photos or videos of each other. We don't share photos of other people without their permission. If something we shared ends up somewhere it shouldn't be, we tell each other right away.
Bullying — Witnessing It, Stopping It, Reporting It
We don't pile on. If we see bullying, we don't laugh, share, or look away — we step in safely and tell a parent. If we are the target, we know we can come to each other and we won't be in trouble for telling.
Inappropriate Content
If we accidentally see something that scares or confuses us online, we close it and tell a parent. We won't be in trouble for what we saw — we get to talk it through together.
Apps, Games, and What's Allowed
Before downloading a new app or game, we talk about it together. We check the age rating, what it does, and whether it has chat features. The answer can be yes — but it's a together-decision.
Mistakes & Forgiveness — No Punishment for Honesty
If something goes wrong online — a mistake, a regretted post, a conversation that turned scary — we come to each other right away. Telling the truth is never punished. Hiding it is the only thing that gets us in trouble.
Family Check-Ins & Updating Our Constitution
We sit down together every [month/quarter/season] to read this through. Anyone in the family can ask to update an article. Kids' ages, new platforms, and life changes mean this is a living document, not a one-time signing.
