About ShieldScan

Who is behind this site, why it exists, and what we believe about parents, kids, and the internet they share.

What this is

ShieldScan is a free toolkit for parents. It is small on purpose — every page is meant to be something a parent can actually use in the next ten minutes. There is a calm crisis-routing hub for the moment something just happened, awareness pages on grooming and sextortion and bullying and algorithmic harm, fifteen scripts for the conversations parents dread, a Family Digital Constitution builder, nine platform safety walkthroughs, a curated slang glossary, two printable booklets for kids, and a natural-language search that routes you to the right page when you don't know where to start.

For the long version of how the site is put together, see /how-it-works.

Who runs it

ShieldScan is built and written by Krissy at America's Future. The awareness pages adapt material from her published chapter on online recruitment and exploitation. The two booklets in /handouts Your Body Is Not the Enemy and Stay Safe Online — are written by her directly. The site is run by a person, not a brand.

Why it exists

Most of what's online for parents is either monitoring software trying to sell you fear, or sleek institutional pages that treat the internet as someone else's problem. There is a gap in the middle — calm, plain-language tools and scripts for the parent who wants to read, talk, and act, not surveil. That gap is what we wrote ShieldScan into.

What we believe

  • The kids who come through hard moments online are the ones whose parents stayed steady. Every page on this site is written so that the calm version of you is the one reading it.
  • Parents don't need to be tech experts to be the most important person in their kid's online life. Awareness, not monitoring, is the protective factor.
  • The internet's hardest patterns are knowable. Grooming, sextortion, bullying, algorithmic harm — they have shapes, and learning the shapes turns panic into clarity.
  • Privacy is not optional. No accounts, no email collection, no analytics. Almost every page runs in your browser only; the two AI carve-outs are named explicitly on the privacy page.

What this isn't

ShieldScan is a flashlight, not a security camera. We do not watch your kid's phone. We do not push you notifications. We do not replace the conversation you need to have at your kitchen table. The whole site is designed to make that conversation easier, calmer, and more grounded — and to be there in the moment you need a phone number, a script, or a 30-minute checklist.
